The PMV research group has been conducting annual evaluations of the BARMER Drug Report since 2016.
The current Drug Report 2025 focuses on “Vaccinations in Adults” and is published in the form of two e-papers (Part 1 and Part 2).
The first e-paper (Part 1) examines the frequency of vaccination against herpes zoster (shingles), a painful skin rash with the risk of long-lasting pain or even blindness if the eye is affected. The vaccination is recommended by STIKO and has been covered by health insurance since May 2019 for people aged 60 and over and for people with certain pre-existing conditions. The analyses show that only around 20 percent of those eligible are vaccinated, indicating a significant vaccination gap. The analysis also shows that there are not only regional differences in vaccination rates, but also significant differences in vaccination activities among general practitioners, ranging from 0 to 88 percent. Since practices with low herpes zoster vaccination rates also vaccinate less frequently against influenza, it can be assumed that the low vaccination rates are less due to a refusal to vaccinate on the part of the insured and more to a lack of vaccination services offered by family doctors.
The second e-paper will deal with influenza vaccination and will be published at the end of 2025.
