A relevant share of women develop gestational diabetes mellitus during pregnancy. Like type 2 diabetes, this form of diabetes is based on insulin resistance. Although in many cases abnormal blood sugar metabolism returns to normal after pregnancy, affected women have a significantly increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Children also have an increased risk of obesity with accompanying cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. In view of this high risk for mother and child, the postpartum phase is an important time to control the mothers' metabolism, to inform the women well and to recommend further care services if necessary.

Therefore, this project aimed to investigate the frequency of gestational diabetes on the basis of health insurance claims data, to determine the proportion of women with screening in pregnancy and postpartum follow-up after gestational diabetes (time, type, group of doctors, test procedure) and the factors influencing the use of screening and follow-up care.
